Background of the Study
Urbanization is a dynamic process that reshapes landscapes and socio-economic structures, but its rapid pace can challenge environmental sustainability. In Eket Local Government Area, Akwa Ibom State, urban expansion has led to significant environmental transformations. Increased construction activities, deforestation, and waste accumulation are some of the negative externalities associated with urban growth. These developments have raised concerns about air and water quality, soil degradation, and the overall balance of the local ecosystem (Babatunde, 2024). As urban areas expand, the conversion of green spaces into built environments disrupts natural habitats and reduces biodiversity, thereby impacting environmental sustainability (Uche, 2023). Moreover, the inadequate implementation of environmental regulations and limited public awareness compound these issues, resulting in unsustainable urban practices. Recent research highlights that sustainable urban planning and the adoption of eco-friendly technologies can alleviate some of these adverse effects (Onyema, 2023). However, economic pressures and rapid population growth often force local authorities to prioritize short-term development over long-term environmental health. This study aims to critically evaluate the environmental impacts of urbanization in Eket, assessing both the challenges and potential strategies for integrating sustainability into urban planning. The findings are intended to inform policymakers and urban planners on the urgent need to balance development with environmental conservation.

Statement of the Problem
The rapid urbanization in Eket Local Government Area has led to environmental challenges that threaten long-term sustainability. Unplanned urban growth has resulted in significant deforestation, increased pollution, and a loss of biodiversity. The expansion of built-up areas has replaced natural landscapes, compromising ecosystem functions and reducing the quality of life for residents (Onyema, 2023). Additionally, inadequate waste management and poor enforcement of environmental regulations exacerbate these issues, leading to deteriorating air and water quality. These environmental challenges pose risks to public health and hinder sustainable development. Without effective urban planning and environmental management strategies, the continued growth of Eket may result in irreversible ecological damage (Agbo, 2024).

Objectives of the Study:

  • To assess the environmental impacts of urbanization in Eket.

  • To evaluate the effectiveness of current urban planning and environmental policies.

  • To recommend sustainable strategies for balancing urban growth and environmental conservation.

Research Questions:

  • What are the main environmental challenges associated with urbanization in Eket?

  • How effective are current policies in mitigating urban-induced environmental degradation?

  • What sustainable practices can be adopted to improve environmental outcomes amid urban growth?

Research Hypotheses:

  • H1: Urbanization in Eket significantly contributes to environmental degradation.

  • H2: Current urban planning policies are inadequate in addressing environmental challenges.

  • H3: Implementing sustainable urban practices will improve the local environment.

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it examines the adverse environmental impacts of rapid urbanization in Eket and proposes sustainable solutions. By identifying key challenges and evaluating policy effectiveness, the research offers valuable insights for urban planners and policymakers aiming to balance development with environmental protection. The study’s recommendations could guide future urban planning initiatives and contribute to the broader discourse on sustainable development, ultimately enhancing public health and ecological resilience (Babatunde, 2024).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is confined to Eket Local Government Area and focuses solely on the environmental impacts of urbanization. Data is collected from local government reports, surveys, and environmental assessments, which may limit the study’s wider applicability.

Definitions of Terms:

  • Urbanization: The process of increasing population concentration in urban areas leading to land use changes.

  • Environmental Sustainability: The capacity to maintain ecological processes and functions over time.

  • Eco-friendly Technologies: Innovations that reduce environmental harm and promote sustainable practices.
